Acridine Orange is a methachromatic fluorescent cationic dye that permeates the cell membrane and intercalates DNA and RNA. It allows for visual detection of nucleic acids on agarose and polyacrylamide gels. Acridine Orange is predominantly used in fluorescence and epifluoresence microscopy.
